Snakes and Ladders

Kaito had to postpone the heist he was panning to take down the Silver Shadows as a precious gemstone was going to be on display at the Yokohama art museum for four days only. He couldn't let the opportunity pass and quickly drafted up a notice for The Black Galaxy Opal and sent it off to the police station. He drafted up plans with Jii and went over the likelihood of a few unwanted guests turning up. They both came to the conclusion to plan for a quick heist-get in, check the jewel, and get out. He didn't need anyone from the Taskforce hanging around when the stakes were much higher than usual.

Everything had gone fairly well, at first. Just as he'd planned, he'd cut the lights out at 8.42.03PM. At 8.43.01 the lights flickered on for just a moment, the dummy kid by the display case. At 8.42.06 he slapped a note on the case stating Kaitou Kid had taken the jewel but left a lovely replica in its place. 8.43.13 he pressed a button to blast the glass of the display room window and deployed the dummy Kid hand-glider and waited for the police to to give chase, which Nakamori predictably did and just like that the task force was out of the building.

"You fall for that every time." Kaito sighed as he moved over to the display case. The urgency of the situation meant that no one had even thought to check the jewel to see if it was a fake. He was almost disappointed.

Oh well, a win was a win and he pulled the case up and grabbed the jewel in a gloved hand. The moment he heard the sound of a phone ringing and looked wildly around before moving over to a bench and pulling the taped burner out from under the bench.

"I was beginning to wonder if I'd be seeing you tonight." He answered, tone clipped as he knew exactly who was on the other line-or he thought he did.

The voice on the other end made his blood go cold.

"Kid-san! You'd better not do anything he-KYAAH!" Aoko's shaky but still angry voice was abruptly cut off. The man that had grabbed her from her home covered her mouth his hand and she fought the urge to bite. She would have, but he and his cronies had guns. Instead, she settled for a fierce glare.

"I believe you met Nakmaori's daughter. I heard you took quite a fall for her. So how about a trade? The Jewel for her life." The cruel voice of of the man that had killed Kaito's dad stated, threatening to take someone else Kaito loved. "We'll meet in Yokohama, since you're already there."

"See, now, you just but your lip. That's what I'm talking about. That's a 'tell'. I know you get nervous when you have good cards in your hand." Tony had set up a whole production for them from the card table, the low hanging light, and serving Peter ginger ale to look like the scotch Tony was drinking. Aunt May was going to kill the engineer but he was teaching Peter how to play poker. Peter had picked up the game rules in no time, it was the poker face he was awful at.

"Alright shuffle and redeal. I want to have no-" His cell phone started to buzz. Reaching for it, he glanced unconcerned at the name on the screen. "Idea what is in your hand. Hey, Kaito, did you come up with our plan yet? I was starting to think you'd gotten cold feet."

Peter groaned, frustrated with himself that he just couldn't seem to keep his thoughts from being obvious. It was a good thing they weren't playing real Poker, otherwise Peter might have lost everything he owned by now. He gathered the cards back up to shuffle them once more-at least that was something he could do.

He looked up from where he was currently making a bridge out of the shuffle and frowned at Tony. Kaito? As in Kaitou Kid? Must have been since he mentioned the plan.

Tony's eyebrows rose in surprise to learn he was being called for a reason other than the original mission. The tone in Kid's voice spoke of something serious and possibly dangerous afoot. He doubted the proud thief would be asking for his help otherwise. Without having to ask, he glanced at his watch to find the answer there from Friday.

"Four minutes twenty-four seconds. Am I meeting you on the roof?" He got to his feet and even as He was talking, the Phantom Thief would be able to hear the clank of metal as Tony's suit of armor slid into place. To Peter, he called, "Something's come up. Try practicing in the mirror."

Peter suddenly jumped up, setting the cards back down at the table before moving closer over to Tony.

"You're just gonna leave me here? What happened? Can't I come?" He frowned heavily, brown eyes making a typical puppy-dog expression. Whether it was intentional or not couldn't be determined. "I could be useful!"

"No, he's staying here." He didn't need Kid to warn him against it. He already doubted Peter's confidence was back yet and he didn't need for the boy to come just to get hurt again. He also didn't have time to stand here and explain himself so that was all the poor kid was getting too.

He opened the door onto the balcony and launched himself into the air. He didn't glance back as he narrowed his focus on Kid (and away from those kicked puppy eyed). "I understand you wouldn't, Kid. Do you have time to fill me in while I travel?"

Tony muttered a curse under his breathe. There wasn't anything Kid had to say to explain why this was so important beyond that. The part he was most concerned about was why Aoko. Kid had seemed so careful about his identity and yet someone had picked up on the connection between him and his other persona. That didn't bode well.

"Have you been able to determine if the jewel is the one you're after?" He asked, pushing his rockets to a higher gear. Obviously these thugs weren't really going to probably be honorable about trading the jewel for Aoko unharmed, but he wanted to know all the information he could. If the jewel wasn't important, it gave them more to work with- and no, just being a priceless rock wasn't 'important' in his book. "Kid. Listen to me. We're getting her back."

Obviously Tony wasn't aware of whatever the last heist consisted of, so his only information was based off the little he knew about Kid. The hotel was coming into focus. Friday automatically searched for the best place for him to land to get him to the room the thief had mentioned as they continued to talk.

"Alright here's what I'm thinking. This guy doesn't know I'm involved, so I'll kick out whoever is in the room next to wherever you're meeting. I can use a sensor to overhear everything. The minute you make a signal I'll start scanning the building for Aoko. Stall until the scan is done and I can make a signal back indicating she's not there. If she is, I'm going to go get her. If she isn't or if he takes her directly to the room you're in, then I'll wait till a good moment and take him down. Questions?"

Tony paused as he was just opening the door from the roof of the hotel. "What?!" Oh. He was going to strangle Kid! There was an audible huff before Tony simply hung up. That gave him time to curse in before he was in the presence of the teenager again.

He didn't knock on the door as he walked into the hotel room no longer visibly wearing his Iron Man gear. "The next time you call me with a mayday call like that, how about a heads up that the hotel is where we're just brainstorming the plan instead of you're about to get your ass filled with bullets?" He glanced around and frowned when the hotel room wasn't nearly nice enough to have a minibar. There wasn't even a mini-fridge!

Sighing, he went over and plopped down on the edge of the second queen bed on the side facing Kid. "Let's see this jewel." Just because so far that was the only information they had.

"To be fair, I assumed it would take that for you to call me," Tony quipped back, his lip curling into a smirk. Now that the initial worry was gone he could joke off the situation. Relaxing, he slid a small metallic disk out of his pocket and handed it over to Kaito. "Stick that somewhere on you that won't be seen. I know you like your disguises but I need to keep an eye on you tonight. Don't worry, I'll remove it when the mission's over."

As he examined the jewel, he didn't see anything overly impressive about it besides maybe the size. The sparkles were pretty. "When and where did you steal this? How did these guys tell you about Aoko?" He offered the stone back.

Tony quickly caught up to speed from the news report and the explanation Kid gave him. He examined the burner phone but decided even if he could trace where the call had taken place Snake and Aoko wouldn't be there anymore.

"How close should Jii be by now? I'm assuming he's joining us." Tony asked, settling back against the bed, similar to what Kaito was doing, only putting his arms behind his head like he was just hanging out instead of plotting to save the most important person in the boy's life. "What exactly are you doing?"

Before he could think too hard about what useful thing could he be doing instead of just sitting there watching Kaito work, the phone was ringing. The visor portion of his helmet came sliding down in front of his face and he ordered quietly, "Friday, trace that call!"

On the screen he saw on his side of the visor was a map of the city and rapidly it zoomed out till it was a world-view. Confused he watched as it landed in an area of Italy. Scowling, he lifted the visor and looked at Kaito who from the conversation was obviously not having a chat with Snake. These kids were going to make him crazy!

"Who the hell is that?" He hissed in a semi-hushed voice at Kaito. Was now really the time for chitchatting with some Italian pen-pal or whatever was going on?

What was with all these high school aged detectives and thieves? It was weird. Maybe that's what happened with all the overachieving in Japan. Was that stereotyping? That might be stereotyping. Either way, the detective seemed to not be even close to the friend level Conan was and Kaito refused to call that boy a friend. So what was the deal with this guy?

"Some guy calling your girl?" Tony asked, when Kaito got off the phone. "Just some friendly advice? Don't suggest other guys think of your girlfriend in the tub."

For such a smart thief, this guy clearly needed some help with his game play with women.

"Well if you ever want to change that relationship status, I did once score with every girl from a Victoria Secret calendar." He'd let it be ambiguous one whether that was at once or over a period of time. Either way, he was still using Kaito's tablet to find the heaviest population of police officers in the city. Next where might there be some power surges or major fluxes, like someone cutting the breaker for a whole building or.. "Your tablet sucks. I'm getting you a new one tomorrow."

He paused and looked up. "You should also start investing in some better technology for your work. You should have trackers on Jii and Aoko at all times. Get her a ring or necklace or something that's bugged so this kind of thing won't happen again. I have about ten different spots on Peter's suit that's bugged because he keeps finding them."

Kaito would be amazed what women could forgive.

"You're a thief and you're worried about stalking?" Tony quipped. He wasn't going to force someone to accept his generosity (except Peter) but he could see how a few extra gadgets here and there and Kid would be even more unstoppable. Like perhaps a bullet proof vest for underneath his outfit- with the work he'd done on Spider-Man's suit, he liked to think he'd perfected the balance between flexible and lightweight material and hard, effective armor. On second thought... "Do you wear any kind of protection under your suit? If you don't then you're going to get something from me. You can whine about not needing a tablet, but I'd rather you no wind up dead over your arrogance." Like he was one to talk.

Well fine then. Kaito wouldn't get any fun, free, very effective and state of the art tech from Stark Industries.

He nodded, satisfied that Kid seemed far more on the ball than other the boy's age. He could respect that kind of foresight. With a sigh, he tried to think of additional ways to be helpful- but not offering any more equipment that Kid didn't need or want. Instead, he opened up a scanner and started flipping through channels of police scanners in the city. He told Friday to also do it and listen for any mention of Aoko, a kidnapping resembling her description/ age/ location/ etc, or anything else that just seemed out of place. Obviously that last part was what he was doing, not Friday since that was too vague.

Tony stopped what he was doing and looked over at Kaito. “If there are two with fake plates why are we suspecting three other ones? Which two are the illegal cars?” He came over to the young man’s side and peered over so he could see what he was doing.

He checked his watch. “Why’s it taking so long for this guy to call you back?”

[personal profile] runs_on_batteries 2019-02-04 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
The explanation made perfect sense to Tony. He wasn't a detective, so a lot of this was new. He might be a genius, but even he had a learning curve. So excuse him if something that was obvious to Kaito wasn't quite so to the engineer.

"If this guy is overly confident then he might use his real plates simply because he doesn't think there's anything you can do about it. Do you know if he has contacts among the police? We could tell them to put out a watch for those five cars." It wouldn't work if Snake had police connections. It would only agitate someone who was already willing to kidnap a young girl. That was the last thing Tony wanted to do.

Tony smirked. "She did seem feisty. Congrats on that, by the way."

Tony smirked and shook his head. "Don't worry about it." Kaito would find out when he was older- assuming he got over his aversion to admit Aoko was his girlfriend. However, the more pressing topic was what Snake and Aoko were up to and what this delay was all about.

"I agree that.. uh.." He began to speak when suddenly Kaito turned into some blond guy at lightening speed. Tony's sentence trailed off as he stared at the young man confused. "Well, you certainly look different now. How is that supposed to help us?"

Obviously, Tony didn't know the face Kaito was stealing belonged to anyone.

[personal profile] kid_in_disguise 2019-02-04 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The disguise isn't quite perfect-Hakuba is a good deal taller than him-sitting at about six foot and there's just no way Kaito can add that much artificial height without it being obvious. The best he can do is give the illusion of being taller.

"Hakuba Saguru-another detective you haven't had the displeasure of meeting yet-he's the one in Italy." Instead of being in Japan where he might be some use he had to be on a different continent. Useless Detective.

"He and Aoko- know each other." He stops himself from calling them friends. "And he happens to be the chief superintendent's son, so I'll be able to visit the police station without too much trouble." He just hoped he wouldn't run into Nakamori there.

Ah, dress up as the guy they just talked to. That worked for Tony. "Great, let's head to the station then."

Would it be weird for Tony Stark to be accompanying a detective to the police station? Probably. The weirdest thing he was known to do? Not even close. On the way there, Tony had Friday run through traffic surveillance of all five cars to where they were headed. Two of the five went off the grid before reaching their destination. One other went to somewhere that could potentially be place to hold a hostage. The last two went to a restaurant and an ice cream parlor, so probably not their guy.
kid_in_disguise: (man I hate this guy)

[personal profile] kid_in_disguise 2019-03-27 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Kaito's not too happy about having to borrow Hakuba's face-he prefers to keep using this disguise to a minimum because he doesn't want to have to deal with the bastard detective's subtle digs. But it's for Aoko, he can suck it up for Aoko. Luckily, the police station isn't too far off from the hotel.

It isn't easy to convince the inspector (Yokomizo, if Kaito was remembering correctly) to give him access to what he needs. Yokomizo is one of the inspector's a little more skeptical of bringing a teenager into police investigation but Hakuba's own reputation is enough that the man doesn't feel the need to verify his identity with Chief Hakuba or Nakamori. Which would have easily blown his cover as he's sure both were well aware the real Hakuba Saguru isn't even in the country.

Still, there was no call from Snake and longer it took for him to call back, the more anxious Kaito was beginning to feel. Where was Aoko? Did Snake even still have her? Surely, she'd have called someone by now if she managed to escape.

At least now they had narrowed it down to three cars. One of the one's that dropped off the grid was shown to be a rental. And o course, it was one of the ones that they couldn't track the whereabouts of.

"There aren't any reports of stolen cars matching descriptions of the others-the Rental is probably Snake's."
