Snakes and Ladders
Kaito had to postpone the heist he was panning to take down the Silver Shadows as a precious gemstone was going to be on display at the Yokohama art museum for four days only. He couldn't let the opportunity pass and quickly drafted up a notice for The Black Galaxy Opal and sent it off to the police station. He drafted up plans with Jii and went over the likelihood of a few unwanted guests turning up. They both came to the conclusion to plan for a quick heist-get in, check the jewel, and get out. He didn't need anyone from the Taskforce hanging around when the stakes were much higher than usual.
Everything had gone fairly well, at first. Just as he'd planned, he'd cut the lights out at 8.42.03PM. At 8.43.01 the lights flickered on for just a moment, the dummy kid by the display case. At 8.42.06 he slapped a note on the case stating Kaitou Kid had taken the jewel but left a lovely replica in its place. 8.43.13 he pressed a button to blast the glass of the display room window and deployed the dummy Kid hand-glider and waited for the police to to give chase, which Nakamori predictably did and just like that the task force was out of the building.
"You fall for that every time." Kaito sighed as he moved over to the display case. The urgency of the situation meant that no one had even thought to check the jewel to see if it was a fake. He was almost disappointed.
Oh well, a win was a win and he pulled the case up and grabbed the jewel in a gloved hand. The moment he heard the sound of a phone ringing and looked wildly around before moving over to a bench and pulling the taped burner out from under the bench.
"I was beginning to wonder if I'd be seeing you tonight." He answered, tone clipped as he knew exactly who was on the other line-or he thought he did.
The voice on the other end made his blood go cold.

"I believe you met Nakmaori's daughter. I heard you took quite a fall for her. So how about a trade? The Jewel for her life." The cruel voice of of the man that had killed Kaito's dad stated, threatening to take someone else Kaito loved. "We'll meet in Yokohama, since you're already there."
no subject
It wasn't as if Snake had never tried to kill him before but this was different. This involved Aoko-a life he couldn't trade for anything-a life he couldn't even sort of risk losing. He pocketed the phone and glanced out the broken window, it wouldn't be long before the police would be back after having discovered the dummy. He grabbed the Opal, stored it in his other breast pocket and leaped out of the window with a running start. He let himself spiral for a moment before deploying his glider and taking off for the hotel he was staying at with Jii.
On the way, he pulled out his phone and dialed in the number he'd gotten a few days ago. This was bad, he needed back up.
no subject
"Alright shuffle and redeal. I want to have no-" His cell phone started to buzz. Reaching for it, he glanced unconcerned at the name on the screen. "Idea what is in your hand. Hey, Kaito, did you come up with our plan yet? I was starting to think you'd gotten cold feet."
no subject
He looked up from where he was currently making a bridge out of the shuffle and frowned at Tony. Kaito? As in Kaitou Kid? Must have been since he mentioned the plan.
no subject
"It's not quite done-there are still a few things I need to hear back from my contact on but this isn't about that." He didn't bother with pleasantries since Tony was already aware of his identity. "How fast are you able to get to the Red Castle Hotel in Yokohama?"
no subject
"Four minutes twenty-four seconds. Am I meeting you on the roof?" He got to his feet and even as He was talking, the Phantom Thief would be able to hear the clank of metal as Tony's suit of armor slid into place. To Peter, he called, "Something's come up. Try practicing in the mirror."
no subject
"You're just gonna leave me here? What happened? Can't I come?" He frowned heavily, brown eyes making a typical puppy-dog expression. Whether it was intentional or not couldn't be determined. "I could be useful!"
no subject
He made it to the hotel and angle himself for a landing. "Room 1312." He passed on, his feet skidding on the hard concrete. "You know that I wouldn't ask for your help unless I had to, so I'd advise against bringing the little spider. He doesn't need to be introduced to this problem."
no subject
He opened the door onto the balcony and launched himself into the air. He didn't glance back as he narrowed his focus on Kid (and away from those kicked puppy eyed). "I understand you wouldn't, Kid. Do you have time to fill me in while I travel?"
no subject
"It's Aoko." He admitted, pulling the door to lead him back into the building open. "She's been taken ransom by the same people that-" Killed his dad. "Anyway, it's the jewel or her life." He somehow managed to drain the emotion out of his voice. "I have the jewel and I'm waiting to be contacted again about a meeting place. This is undoubtedly some kind of trap but I know for a fact he has Aoko."
no subject
"Have you been able to determine if the jewel is the one you're after?" He asked, pushing his rockets to a higher gear. Obviously these thugs weren't really going to probably be honorable about trading the jewel for Aoko unharmed, but he wanted to know all the information he could. If the jewel wasn't important, it gave them more to work with- and no, just being a priceless rock wasn't 'important' in his book. "Kid. Listen to me. We're getting her back."
no subject
"It's not." He said bluntly, moving through the upper levels of the hotel and making his way to the elevator to get to floor thirteen. "But he'll want to check for himself."
He didn't need Tony Stark to tell him that they'd get Aoko back-he knew they would because he couldn't lose her-especially not because of the same man that had killed his dad. Snake had taken his world from him once before already, he would not let it happen a second time.
no subject
"Alright here's what I'm thinking. This guy doesn't know I'm involved, so I'll kick out whoever is in the room next to wherever you're meeting. I can use a sensor to overhear everything. The minute you make a signal I'll start scanning the building for Aoko. Stall until the scan is done and I can make a signal back indicating she's not there. If she is, I'm going to go get her. If she isn't or if he takes her directly to the room you're in, then I'll wait till a good moment and take him down. Questions?"
no subject
"Knowing how Snake usually works, I'd say he'll keep her with him." Kaito responded, fully expecting to be called to some abandoned warehouse on the edge of town. How Cliche he rolled his eyes at the very thought just as he pushed his way into the hotel room he'd rented for the night and noted that Jii hadn't made it back from the museum just yet.
"But the moment, I'm waiting on him to call back to tell me the exchange point." In the meantime though, it was time start up a little detective work. He grabbed his laptop with one hand and settled onto one of the two queen-sized beds. He'd at least wait on Stark to get there before he headed back to the museum.
no subject
He didn't knock on the door as he walked into the hotel room no longer visibly wearing his Iron Man gear. "The next time you call me with a mayday call like that, how about a heads up that the hotel is where we're just brainstorming the plan instead of you're about to get your ass filled with bullets?" He glanced around and frowned when the hotel room wasn't nearly nice enough to have a minibar. There wasn't even a mini-fridge!
Sighing, he went over and plopped down on the edge of the second queen bed on the side facing Kid. "Let's see this jewel." Just because so far that was the only information they had.
no subject
"If I was just about to walk into the proverbial lion's den, I would have said so." If he could avoid making someone just jump headfirst into danger, he was going to do it. Conan might not have thought that kind of information was important when asking for a favor, but Kaito did. Most likely because he knew the importance of giving your accomplice all the necessary information.
He fished the gemstone out his pocket and tossed it over to Stark. It's a dull, black color with speckles of yellow, blue, pink and some purple.
no subject
As he examined the jewel, he didn't see anything overly impressive about it besides maybe the size. The sparkles were pretty. "When and where did you steal this? How did these guys tell you about Aoko?" He offered the stone back.
no subject
"Jii and I thought that they might make an appearance-the gem was only supposed to be showing for one more day and we didn't think Snake would pass up the chance to try and get this one too. The original plan had been to get in, lure the police and anyone else that could be caught in the crossfire, away, check the jewel and get out. Instead, the moment I got ahold of the jewel he called this phone." He pulled the burner out of his pocket.
"But it was Aoko on the phone, at first. She was probably given some form of script to say but didn't because, She's Aoko and she hates being told what to do." He let out a small sigh as his license plate search wasn't working as well as he'd hoped. "Snake made his demands and said we'd meet in Yokohama before he hung up."
no subject
"How close should Jii be by now? I'm assuming he's joining us." Tony asked, settling back against the bed, similar to what Kaito was doing, only putting his arms behind his head like he was just hanging out instead of plotting to save the most important person in the boy's life. "What exactly are you doing?"
no subject
"Jii's still with the task force, sometimes it's not easy to slip by Nakamori-but he should be back soon." And if not, Jii would certainly call him. The moment the thought had occurred, his personal phone started ringing and he picked up, frowning at the area code. Who did he know in Italy?
"Aa... hello?" He answered carefully, tensing up immediately at the sound of that sugary, yet obnoxious tone of voice.
"Aa, Kuroba, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to reach you, as I'm sure you're still busy in Yokohama." He should have just ignored the stupid phone call.
"Y-Yokohama?" He did a good job of sounding confused. "Why the hell would I be there?"
"You know why." Hakuba's voice sounded serious a moment. "However, I'm not calling just so that you can deny obvious facts-""
"Why would I-" Kaito sighed somewhat dramatically. "How many times do I have to tell you; I'm not Kid." he rolled his eyes.
no subject
On the screen he saw on his side of the visor was a map of the city and rapidly it zoomed out till it was a world-view. Confused he watched as it landed in an area of Italy. Scowling, he lifted the visor and looked at Kaito who from the conversation was obviously not having a chat with Snake. These kids were going to make him crazy!
"Who the hell is that?" He hissed in a semi-hushed voice at Kaito. Was now really the time for chitchatting with some Italian pen-pal or whatever was going on?
no subject
"Whatever." Hakuba had brushed his denial off, causing Kaito to grit his teeth. 'your pointless denial's aside-I'm concerned something might have happened to Aoko-san." How did Hakuba know about that?
"Aoko's fine. I talked to her this morning." Kaito rolled his eyes and grabbed his tablet off the bedside table before pulling up a picture of Hakuba Saguru and an article on some case he'd solved in London.
"Yes, and I was talking to her just an hour, twelve minutes and eight seconds ago. She said someone was at the door and she'd call me back. She never did, when I tried to call her it went straight to voicemail."
"That doesn't mean anything, she's probably just in the bath or something-she loves-" He cleared his throat, not wanting Hakuba to think about that. "She probably just forgot to call back. Not everything is a case." He adjusted the time on the traffic camera he was reviewing back to the time Hakuba had indicated. "Anyway, I've gotta get back to work-don't call me again." He hung up on the detective.
no subject
"Some guy calling your girl?" Tony asked, when Kaito got off the phone. "Just some friendly advice? Don't suggest other guys think of your girlfriend in the tub."
For such a smart thief, this guy clearly needed some help with his game play with women.
no subject
"It... was just the first thing I could think of for why she wouldn't answer her phone." He tossed the phone away and resumed looking through those traffic cameras, still grumbling about stupid half-british detectives. "...And she's not my girlfriend."
He glanced at the clock on his laptop-it was now 9.17. Why hadn't Snake called to taunt him again? Was there some form of traffic jam somewhere?
"Well, at least I know the time frame in which Aoko was taken." Thanks to Hakuba, but he'd rather die than admit that out loud.
no subject
He paused and looked up. "You should also start investing in some better technology for your work. You should have trackers on Jii and Aoko at all times. Get her a ring or necklace or something that's bugged so this kind of thing won't happen again. I have about ten different spots on Peter's suit that's bugged because he keeps finding them."
no subject
"That's just the tablet I use as Kuroba Kaito. It doesn't have to be high-tech. and I think sticking a tracker on my best-friend counts as stalking." Although, after this, he might be tempted to do it anyway. "Besides, I can't do anything that might tie Kaitou Kid to me-that Hakuba bastard's just waiting on the evidence and do you have any idea how much Aoko hates Kaitou Kid?"
She'd never forgive him and she'd have every right to hate him for all the things he's put her through.
no subject
"You're a thief and you're worried about stalking?" Tony quipped. He wasn't going to force someone to accept his generosity (except Peter) but he could see how a few extra gadgets here and there and Kid would be even more unstoppable. Like perhaps a bullet proof vest for underneath his outfit- with the work he'd done on Spider-Man's suit, he liked to think he'd perfected the balance between flexible and lightweight material and hard, effective armor. On second thought... "Do you wear any kind of protection under your suit? If you don't then you're going to get something from me. You can whine about not needing a tablet, but I'd rather you no wind up dead over your arrogance." Like he was one to talk.
no subject
"The first time I met Snake he shot me point blank in the chest." He explained. "Luckily, I just so happened to have the jewel stored in the pocket over my heart. Since then, I've met up with him exactly three other times and he shot at me for all three times." He wasn't going anywhere near that man without a bullet proof vest.
no subject
He nodded, satisfied that Kid seemed far more on the ball than other the boy's age. He could respect that kind of foresight. With a sigh, he tried to think of additional ways to be helpful- but not offering any more equipment that Kid didn't need or want. Instead, he opened up a scanner and started flipping through channels of police scanners in the city. He told Friday to also do it and listen for any mention of Aoko, a kidnapping resembling her description/ age/ location/ etc, or anything else that just seemed out of place. Obviously that last part was what he was doing, not Friday since that was too vague.

"So far, I've narrowed it down to five cars." He finally announces. Two have fake license plate- A Silvarado, and pilot, one's a Murano, one's an Escalade, and the last one is a accord."
no subject
He checked his watch. “Why’s it taking so long for this guy to call you back?”
no subject
He frowns and presses his fingers to his temples. “Either he’s not calling the shots or Aoko is proving to be more trouble than he expected “
no subject
"If this guy is overly confident then he might use his real plates simply because he doesn't think there's anything you can do about it. Do you know if he has contacts among the police? We could tell them to put out a watch for those five cars." It wouldn't work if Snake had police connections. It would only agitate someone who was already willing to kidnap a young girl. That was the last thing Tony wanted to do.
Tony smirked. "She did seem feisty. Congrats on that, by the way."
no subject
He was considering the pros and cons or alerting the police to have them pull the vehicles over but that would involve Nakamori finding out his only family was in danger. Again. Not to mention, it increased the risk of Snake killing Aoko to avoid capture.
"What are you congratulating me for? That makes it worse because now I have to consider the possibility he just escaped-she does know how to pick a few locks, slip handcuffs and ropes." This complicated things.
"I'm not ready to involve the police just yet-but I can't really run around as Kuroba Kaito on this one." He tapped his chin in thought, trying to decide on who to use for a disguise. He'd use Shinichi as it was the easiest disguise to pull off and didn't require a mask but Aoko didn't know Shinichi and it could cast suspicion on how dead the detective really was.
He gets up from the bed he's sitting on and faster than what should be humanly possible, He was disguised as Hakuba Saguru.
no subject
"I agree that.. uh.." He began to speak when suddenly Kaito turned into some blond guy at lightening speed. Tony's sentence trailed off as he stared at the young man confused. "Well, you certainly look different now. How is that supposed to help us?"
Obviously, Tony didn't know the face Kaito was stealing belonged to anyone.
no subject
"Hakuba Saguru-another detective you haven't had the displeasure of meeting yet-he's the one in Italy." Instead of being in Japan where he might be some use he had to be on a different continent. Useless Detective.
"He and Aoko- know each other." He stops himself from calling them friends. "And he happens to be the chief superintendent's son, so I'll be able to visit the police station without too much trouble." He just hoped he wouldn't run into Nakamori there.
no subject
Would it be weird for Tony Stark to be accompanying a detective to the police station? Probably. The weirdest thing he was known to do? Not even close. On the way there, Tony had Friday run through traffic surveillance of all five cars to where they were headed. Two of the five went off the grid before reaching their destination. One other went to somewhere that could potentially be place to hold a hostage. The last two went to a restaurant and an ice cream parlor, so probably not their guy.

It isn't easy to convince the inspector (Yokomizo, if Kaito was remembering correctly) to give him access to what he needs. Yokomizo is one of the inspector's a little more skeptical of bringing a teenager into police investigation but Hakuba's own reputation is enough that the man doesn't feel the need to verify his identity with Chief Hakuba or Nakamori. Which would have easily blown his cover as he's sure both were well aware the real Hakuba Saguru isn't even in the country.
Still, there was no call from Snake and longer it took for him to call back, the more anxious Kaito was beginning to feel. Where was Aoko? Did Snake even still have her? Surely, she'd have called someone by now if she managed to escape.
At least now they had narrowed it down to three cars. One of the one's that dropped off the grid was shown to be a rental. And o course, it was one of the ones that they couldn't track the whereabouts of.
"There aren't any reports of stolen cars matching descriptions of the others-the Rental is probably Snake's."
